Work Tips

HOW TO SUCCEED AT WORK or IN LIFE

  •  Love your work and be thankful you have one.

You are lucky you have a job, so you can provide for your family and yourself. You are blessed you came this far, where others haven't. Think about the millions of people around the world that are currently unemployed and no opportunity in life in Third World countries or countries that are currently in conflict, experiencing drought and famine. All these people can only dream just to be in your shoes, but couldn't. There is no easy job in this world. And life is not easy either. But it is up to person that looks at how life is. If you to learn to appreciate what you have in life and be thankful for it, then you can see the beauty in life.

Just imagine how these unfortunate people are living with no jobs and no opportunity but you can still see them smile and their outlook in life is totally different. And you wonder, you have a job and an opportunity in North America and you complain about it.

  • Stop complaining on small things, but instead think of a better solution.

Before you complain, think about your complaint. Is it really worth complaining? What are the consequences? Can I do something first? Some people have the hardest jobs, but do not complain. Instead, they think of better ways to resolve any issues at hand. You have to be realistic on your complaints and have a common sense. For example, if a Janitor complains about the floors being dirty then this would be considered unreasonable because this is your job. Or a Dishwasher complaining about too many dishes to wash. Or a Postman complaining about too much mail to deliver. Can you imagine if there were no floors to clean, dishes to wash or letter to deliver? Then you wont have a job! No one will pay you to do nothing.

  • Be open about what you feel and learn to communicate.

Learn to speak up when you have the chance. All problems can be resolved by a simple conversation. Express your views or feelings in a way that is not offensive or hurtful. Communication is the key and can resolve many of problems and issues. In any employment that you take if you do not communicate to your superiors and raise the issues of concern, they will never know how you feel.

  • Respect your job and those people around you.

No matter how simple your job is or who you are working for or who you are with, show consideration to others or their feelings. They will respect you back if you show the same thing. By respecting your job, one can show their maturity and stability. And if for any reason, the position that you are in is not for you, be respectful and honest and explain to them the reasons for your decision.

  • Stand for what you believe in.

Do not let others decide for you, for you know better what you are going through. It is alright to ask others for opinion but in the end, it is your heart and mind that you should follow. Ask yourself, is this the right thing to do? What are the repercussion of this decision? Remember quitting is never the solution in employment and in life. Do not let others influence your decision, but use their concern for you and their opinion to do the right thing. A friend that encourages you to quit your job, should never be considered as a friend.

  • Do not share confidential information or talk about your employers personal life with your friends.

They trusted you and believed in your ability. If you have something to say about them, let them know. Sharing it with others is rude and betrayal of their trust, and becomes gossip. You would not want them talking about you either, would you?

  • Separate your personal life with your work.

You have time for work and time for yourself. Do not mix the two. Focus on the job, coz others are depending on you. Avoid doing personal things while working if you can, like making phone calls or chatting with neighbors. Only do it when necessary, but quick. Do not bring home your work problem. When you are off, enjoy the day by not thinking about your work. Give that time to yourself.

  • Admit to your mistakes, be humble and apologize.

You and I are only human, and we make mistakes. Saying the word "sorry" will make a big difference. Always find a way to work things out, like talking and explaining what you really feel. And you'll see, things will get better. Do not avoid conversation. And always be humble. If it is necessary to part ways, do it without hard feelings for each other.

  • Have a positive outlook in life.

It is best to see things in a positive approach. While everyone is different in their outlook in life, having a positive attitude is always healthy. Waking up in the morning feeling great is better than waking up in the morning resenting the whole day. When you are negative you grow old much faster as it shows in your face when you are sad. Being negative can only ruin yourself and it is not healthy.

  • Have a good work ethic.

In any type of employment, as an employee you are required to have commitment, dedication and hard work. Not all of us are blessed to do things that we all like. For example, be a basketball star or a singer or an actor. But being a basketball star, singer and an actor requires commitment, lots of it, dedication and hard work. It is not easy to do what they do and this is the reason they get paid a lot. But even if you get paid a lot for what you do, if you do not have the commitment, dedication and hard work, one can still lose that high paying job. Because if one cannot even perform well with a menial position, what makes you think you can get a promotion and handle a better position with better pay. If you are a lousy worker no one will employ you and it is more likely that you will be stuck in that position and earn the same wage. Learn to love your work because we all need to work.
